# Create a QR Code (/docs/qr-codes/create-a-qr-code)

## Before You Begin [#before-you-begin]

Decide whether you need:

* a **Standard QR** for a website, campaign, event, menu, or other everyday use
* a **GS1 Digital Link** for a retail product that already has a GTIN (the number below its barcode)
* a custom domain if you want the QR link to use your brand
* a campaign or tags if you want to group related QR codes
* a saved logo or image if you want to include one in the design

The Free plan allows one QR code. Every QR code is active as soon as it is created and counts toward the plan limit, so you must delete an unused QR code or upgrade before creating another one.

## Create the QR Code [#create-the-qr-code]

1. Open **QR Codes** and select **Create QR code**.
2. Choose **Standard QR** or **GS1 Digital Link**.
3. Add a clear internal name.
4. For GS1, enter and validate the GTIN.
5. Select the serving domain.
6. Add a valid HTTPS default destination.
7. Optionally assign a campaign and add tracking labels for tools such as Google Analytics.
8. Optionally add device, country, device-and-country, or scheduled destinations.
9. Customize the design and review its scanability.
10. Create the QR code.

## The Default Destination Is the Safety Net [#the-default-destination-is-the-safety-net]

Every routing setup needs a dependable default destination. GeoQR uses it when no device or country rule matches, when device or country detection is unavailable, and outside any temporary schedule window.

Read [Choose Where Scans Go](/docs/qr-codes/destination-rules) before adding device, country, or scheduled destinations.

## Campaigns, Tags, and Tracking Labels [#campaigns-tags-and-tracking-labels]

Campaigns group related QR codes and can provide tracking labels. Those labels apply by default when you assign the campaign, and you can override individual values on the QR code.

Tags are reusable organization labels. You can assign them after the QR record exists.

## Design and Scanability [#design-and-scanability]

Use enough contrast, preserve the quiet zone, and test any logo or styling choice. A visually attractive code can still be difficult to scan when it is printed too small or placed on a low-contrast background.

See [Design and Media](/docs/qr-codes/design-and-media) and [Design Templates](/docs/qr-codes/design-templates).

## Active Immediately [#active-immediately]

Creating a QR code activates its serving link immediately and counts it toward the plan's QR code limit. Later saved changes update the live behavior behind the same encoded link.

## Before You Distribute It [#before-you-distribute-it]

1. Scan the rendered code from a real phone.
2. Test iOS, Android, country, and combined rules that matter to the rollout.
3. Test immediately before, during, and after any scheduled window.
4. Confirm the expected campaign tracking labels and any QR-specific overrides appear in the final link.
5. Verify the final printed or exported artwork, not only the browser preview.
